The causes of the Iraq War are somewhat complicated, but in brief, Saddam Hussein never complied with the terms of the 1991 cease-fire agreement resulting from the Gulf War, and he did not comply with eleven UN Security Council resolutions requiring him to comply with that agreement, and eventually it seemed that some real enforcement was needed. Beyond that, Saddam was a very dangerous dictator, a mass murderer and a supporter of terrorism, and it was felt by the Bush administration that Saddam had to be removed from power for the security of the US and the world. You could also ask why the war has continued under the Obama administration, but wars are complicated, they can't just be turned off like a light switch. The US would not want Iraq to collapse into chaos or be taken over by terrorists as a result of a sudden withdrawal of US forces.
