Unlike bacteria, eukaryotic pathogens have less

features that differ from host cells and thus

less targets to work with:

e.g., ribosomes and other metabolic processes

are basically the same as ours

For this reason there are fewer drugs to turn to

in order to treat eukaryotic infections, however

there are some unique features with which to

target many eukaryotic pathogens.

What are the visual differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?

Prokaryotic cells have small ribsomes, no mitachondria, no nucleus and fewer organelles

Why drugs are becoming less effective?

The most commonly used antibiotics are becoming less effective, as the bacteria they are used against have, over time, developed resistant strains not so much affected by the antibiotic (survival of the fittest - natural selection. Yeah - even among bacteria!) One of the reasons for this is over-prescribing. Fewer and fewer doctors are doing this, but it may be too late already for some long-used antibiotics.

Placing hydrogen peroxide on a cut can produce bubbles What causes the bubbles to form on the cut but not on the skin?

The bubbles could be viewed as a sign that the peroxide is "eating" the bacteria. You will notice after a while that fewer and fewer bubbles appear, that is because the bacteria is getting killed.

Disinfection in relation to patient care?

Disinfection reduces the amount of bacteria and germs patients come in contact with. With fewer germs, bacteria and viruses, patients can remain healthy longer.

What causes antibiotic-associated colitis?

When antibiotics are given, most of the resident bacteria are killed. With fewer bacteria to compete with, the normally harmless Clostridia difficile grow rapidly and produce toxins.

Which statement best describes human insulin that is produced by by genetically engineered bacteria?

Genetically engineered insulin may have fewer side effects than the insulin previously extracted from the pancreases of other animals. This is because genetic engineering inserts human genes such as the gene for insulin production into the DNA of bacteria. As a result, the bacteria that produces human insulin, when used by diabetics, should produce fewer side effects.

What are the arguments for drugs?

Proponents of drug legalization often point to reduced costs of law enforcement, seeing that there would be fewer laws to enforce. Certain drugs, such as marijuana and LSD, are actually purported to be beneficial to one's health.

Do you ever recover from drugs?

It depends on what you mean by drugs and the type of damage they do. I know that if your brain cells are killed, they will never come back. That's why sometimes people who are drug addicts seem to process slower: they have fewer neuron connections.

Can taking dexamphetamine create body odor?

Dexamphetamine has a " flushing" effect that include excreting more gut bacteria than normal. Gut bacteria helps break down some of the odor producing chemicals, and with fewer gut bacteria some of these chemicals may get into the blood stream, and thus into the sweat.

What is the effect of chemicals on food handling?

Do dogs have the cleanest mouth?

There are fewer viruses and bacteria in a dog's mouth than in a human's! But there have been relatively few studies in this area.

How does the type of table effect the amount of bacteria?

A lot of it has to do with the very top surface of the table. If you are using wood, there are many gaps and pits and grooves which can trap bacteria which then multiplies. Conversely, if you use glass there are fewer pits on the surface and it will be much easier to clean.
