Answer:

China fell to the communists despite US Aid to the Chiang Kaishek and the Nationalists. We did not accept Communist China as a country until Richard Nixon and the Shanghai Communique. China did have mass deaths and famine, but this did not occur in 1949. This occured 10 years later under Maos great leap forward in which opposition to the party were executed and people died of mass starvtion.

This is also known as the year of shocks because it was the year the soviets had tested their first nuclear weapon. This came as a shock because our intellegence had been saying the soviets were years away from obtaining the bomb. It was later discovered that their were spies in the US (which lead to more fear of communism) and the people responsible were the Rosenbergs.

Also, in 1948 Alger Hiss was accused of being a communist. He was proven innocent however. Later that year they had discovered incriminating evidence in a pumpkin ( its true) and Alger Hiss was convicted of Purgery in the 1950's. Alger Hiss was a high ranking official in the state department. The Soviet Threat of espionage facilitated the growth of Fear in the United States.
