The US, working with the British, developed the atomic bomb, as it was then called, because it was believed that Nazi Germany was well on the way to making one and it was necessary to be able to match them if they began to use, or threatened to use, such a weapon. As it turned out, the Germans had not been able to overcome technical as well as political problems and were never near to construction of an atomic bomb. Germany surrendered before the American/British effort had been completed. The bomb, once developed, was used on Japan to bring the Pacific war to a sudden end. While there has been subsequent controversy about whether the bomb should have been used on Japan, at the time there were very few people who were aware of the bomb's existence and capabilities and who thought it ought not to be used. Most of those few thought that a demonstration on an unpopulated location should be made first.
Hitler aided the attack because he was in alliance with Japan as well as the fact that Hitler knew if the U.S. got involved in the European war, with all the American forces, that Germany would be destroyed. Thus he wanted to prevent war with japan by keeping their alliance and destroy American forces. He may also have wanted to distract the U.S. from the European war and caused the U.S. to focus on japan rather than Germany, so that Germany could keep on attacking and taking control of European countries.

During WW II, Germany attacked Britain, and Britain retaliated. That's what happens in times of war. You bomb me, and I'll bomb you. Fortunately all of that is over, and Britain and Germany are good friends in the 21st century.
The British tested the hydrogen bomb at Marilinga. There may have been more sites. See the attached link below.
To destroy Germany's capacity to make war.
The American and British government and military leaders never planned for using the first atomic bomb on Nazi Germany, but they did worry that Germany might have an advanced nuclear program, which they did. By the time Germany surrendered in May 1945, the American atomic bomb program still hadn't produced the first bomb.

The B-29. In WW2 there were only 2 planes available with the capacity to carry a bomb the size and weight of the atomic bombs: the american B-29 and the british Lancaster. But since the bomb was american, the plane had to be american. The Lancaster might have been a better choice as it had a longer bomb-bay, permitting a more stable tail fin design, but the B-29 was american.
