A New Hope was simply titled Star Wars when it was initially released. It was the original story that George Lucas intended to create. After that he wanted to continue the story with the sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It was not until some time later that Lucas decided to produce the prequels when the development of CGI allowed him to more fully render his ideas.
