One of the reasons was that she was so well educated. "She knew Shakespeare's plays and sonnets, the poems of Dryden and Addison and Pope, the works of Jonathan Swift. Often, as she sat in her nook by the fireplace, he saw the corner of a book tucked under her arm. If she saw his glance turn toward the book she quickly pushed it out of sight. When he asked her one day why she did this, her sober answer delighted him: 'For females, Mr. Adams, a knowledge beyond the common physical wants of the household is rather a passport to ridicule than to renown.' This, he told himself, was a spirit congenial to his own." (John Adams the reluctant patriot of the revolution pg. 52) John felt she could argue and defend just as well as any man. Even though she was homeschooled, she received and education as good as anyone else's. She was a very kind, loving person as well. She always helped people around her and did her part to help her family.
