President Kennedy and others in his administration believed one of the best ways to end mistrust and misunderstandings between nations was for people to get to know each other better. In a world before the internet and before globalization, Kennedy believed the best way to accomplish that noble goal was to send young American volunteers to work in other countries, performing public service and helping with projects to improve the lives of average people. This, he believed, would minimize anti-American feelings and promote greater cooperation. It would also help Americans to understand the culture of other countries. The stated goal of the Peace Corps, which JFK established in 1961, was to promote world peace and friendship.
