In my opinion he was jealous of his talent and wanted to pull him down. Joe always wanted 2 be famous but when Kathrine and him were dating she got pregnant, with Rebbie, and they married. He always resented this and forced the boys (the future Jackson 5) to practise all the time so he could live his dream through them! He also used to make fun of Michael's acne as a teenager and tell him he looked ugly, and ' you didn't get it from me, not our side of the family.' Because of Joe's physical and physiological abuse towards Michael from such a young age, it really affected him in later life! Poor MJ.
