Pure conviction.

At Oxford, she had been a strong supporter of the Conservative Club, and continued her involvement after she graduated.

She then had great difficulty getting a seat, and was thinking of quitting to become a barrister. Someone talked her out of this, and she eventually won a seat in 1959 - becoming a token woman minister not long after.

Nobody had ever thought her remarkable at this time.
