I am not aware of Nasser blockading the Straits of Tiran in 1952, but it famously happened in 1967. He did so in order to cripple Israel. The Straits of Tiran must be passed-through in order for any ship to arrive in Israel's Red Sea port of Eilat. In the 1960s, more than 90% of Israeli-used petroleum came from Iran (which was Israel's ally at the time) through Eilat. As a result, the blockade was an attempt to force Israel to have insufficient resources to conduct war.
