Rations were necessary world wide during World War II because the prolonged wars and vast amount of troops required much of the food production to survive.

Food was not much of a problem in the US. Gasoline was rationed to reduce domestic consumption and make sure that the war machine had what it needed.

Part of the reason was to make the public focus on the war effort. Some products as laundry detergent were not rationed even though they were in short supply.

The European War had been going on for two years by the time the US entered the war; consequently, the US knew how to fight that war. The US didn't know how, when, where, or even why (to attack some areas) to begin offensive operations in the Pacific. When those areas were chosen, the US had to manage (ration) their warships and aircraft until US production could begin to replace losses.
