The iPod screen may have crashed on an applications splash-screen. To fix this, simply do a soft-reset. Press the home and sleep button simultaneously for around 5 seconds. Your iPod should restard. If not, take it into an Apple Store for further examination.
N.B. If your iPod is jailbroken, it cannot be seen by an Apple Store! When jailbroken, all warranties automatically expire and you will have to pay to get it fixed.
