Jeanne Devolle didn't give her children away, she died due to bad health, a rough life on the roads and the fact that she was almost constantly pregnant. Coco Chanel's father Albert Chanel was a poor traveling salesman who probably had many lovers in different cities. Therefore he didn't have any interest in taking care of five motherless children. It was better for him to start a new life with a new family. Since Albert Chanel travelled so much I also don't think that he did had a very good relationship with his children.
