By the end of the fifteenth century, the last Muslims had been driven from Spain, and Isabella and Ferdinand set about creating an intolerant Christian nation under their domain, even seeking out secret Jews among those who supposedly converted to Christianity in order to avoid expulsion. With the discovery of America, the Spanish kings soon ruled an empire that not only included most of South and Central America, but also the Philippines and parts of Italy and the Low Countries. This encouraged Kings Charles and Philip to believe that they had been favoured by divine providence. It was therefore their responsibility to ensure the conversion of the millions of people who lived in Latin America. They sent missionaries with the conquistodores on their journeys of conquest and plunder.
The papal bull of 1493, that divided the New World into two hemispheres for the benefit of Spain and Portugal, also established the character of the invasion as one of evangelism. However, Spain maintained absolute control over almost all Christian activities, even the appointments of clergy and of bishops.
