The main ethnic groups of the region, the Serbs, Croats, and Muslims, had a long-standing mutual hatred. When Marshall Tito ruled Yugoslavia, he kept everything under control with the traditional iron fist of communist dictators everywhere; after his death, things fell apart in a big way.
