Well, they didn't exactly embrace him. After the Revolution, France was left in total chaos. Nobody knew how thecountry should be governed and by who, since the French had killed the entire Royal family because they wanted to rid themselves of the monarchical system in their country. They did not think it very well through, because they only knew what they didn't want, but not what they did want. Napoleon took advantage of this weak position France was in, and committed a coup. He crowned himself as Emperor and took control. The French were highly sceptical about him, but he did lead France back to being a great nation. At that time he was exactly what France needed.

Napoleon was a military leader before he became the dictator of France. Because the republic witnessed his surreptitious battle strategies and noticed that he won nearly all of the battles he fought in, it was easy to support him. As a result, he later ruled France under a military Dictatorship.

The government offered by Napoleon was seen as a vast improvement over what had been provided by the Monarchy or the Directory. He offered hope for a better tomorrow and bread for today.

He promised them everything, but rarely kept his promises. He provided them with a better government then the Monarchy had, he had ended the Great Terror, and ended the starving times. He was a strong man, and that they could respect.

Because they were fed up with constant revolution and turmoil and wanted a quiet life under a leader who would tell them what to do, win glorious battles, and enrich France with the loot of half Europe.

Of course, he knew that he would kill most of their young men in the process, so he very quickly used his popularity to be voted Consul for Life, and then Emperor. After that, he could do what he liked. Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin used the same techniques, as have many African and Asian dictators in more recent times.

because he made changes within France that would improve society and help provide for the citizens. He controlled prices, encouraged industry, and increased public works. Napoleon was able to win support across classes by opening jobs up to the public that were at one time protected by birthright.

The French were in a vulnerable state and had just come out of a major, radical revolution and they needed a step back. So after they fought this major revolution to establish democracy, they voted Napoléon Bonaparte dictator for life (you also see a similar path the English took with the English Civil War[s] and Cromwell). Napoléon was a great and powerful leader and the French adored him, which is why he ruled.

What decade did Napoleon Bonaparte become Emperor of France?

Oh, dear Heaven, no. Napoleon becoming Emperor put a temporary stop to the Revolution. First, there was the old Régime. The people weren't happy with that and blamed all their problems on the royal family, whom they killed, this period is called the French Revolution and started in 1789. This was followed by a constitution called the Directorate, which was replaced by another called the Consulate. Napoleon became Consul, then First Consul, and eventually commited a coup (in 1799) crowning himself emperor and thus turning France into an Empire. When Napoleon was defeated, the Old Régime was restored, then Napoleon came back and restored the Empire. Then out he went again, and the Old Régime lasted until 1830, when it was replaced by a constitutional monarchy under a different dynasty. In 1848 another revolution founded the Second Republic. The President of this restored the Empire under himself as Napoleon III, and lasted until 1870, when the Third Republic chased him out. That lasted until 1940 and the Vichy régime, and when that was defeated in 1945 a new constitution installed the Fourth Republic. That was dissolved in 1968 and the Fifth Republic came in, and so far has lasted. Since 1789 France has had 23 constitutions. So we know the Revolution started in 1789, and ended in 1799. Napoleon ended the revolution. If, indeed, it has ended. The point is, 'The French revolution' is a misleading term. There have been many. What Napoleon ended was simply the first attempt at a Republic.

How was nationalism important in the defeat of Napoleon's Empire?

The spirit of French nationalism had made possible the mass armies of the revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. However, Napoleon's spread of the principles of the French Revolution beyond France indirectly brought a spread of nationalism as well. The French aroused nationalism in two ways. First, they were hated as oppressors. This hatred stirred the patriotism of others in oppostition to the French. Second, the French showed the people of Europe what nationalism was and what a nation in arms could do.
