There are several reasons why the Industrial Revolution started in Britain. The first is the unification of England and Scotland. This meant two things: stability and no trade barriers between the two countries. The second reason is the legal system. The rule of law had been well established by this time and there was a respect for contracts. The legal system also provided for the formation of joint-stock companies. Another reason is that Britain had a free market economy.

Britain was a tremendous force in the world at that time. They had many territories that they had laid claim to courtesy of having more advanced technology - better ships etc. The connections with these other colonies also created opportunities for them to gain technology from others. Considering their role as conqueror or territorial leader added to their ability to add technological strength.

Along with that the British also excelled at taking those technologically advanced such as steam engines which helped create advancement in mining and many other businesses.
