Actually the Israelites were told by god to wipe out every one in the promised land, but they did not listen to it, and spared them, and even married the girls from there. And now Isrealites have proplem with the Palestine people . The people who are the decendents of the people who lived in the promised land.
The only purpose of the Israelites going to the promised land, which god would give was to stay after gods punishment of wandering for 40 years were over. . To a land of Milk and Honey given by god.
God told Moses to lead them there, and ultimately gave the charge over to Joshua to lead them in. An earlier opportunity was rejected by Israel in disbelief that God could protect them from the fearsome Canaanites, so they wandered in the wilderness 40 years. Only their children entered in, yet with being taught by their parents the deliverance from Egypt was to be celebrated and remembered always, as God had instructed them in His Law.
Most historians now say that the Exodus from Egypt and into the Sinai desert never happened as portrayed in The Bible. However, the Book of Exodus says the Israelites were fleeing from slavery under the Egyptians.
Immediately after the Exodus, God commanded them to go into the Sinai wilderness, and He guided all of their journeys (Numbers ch.9). Sojourning in the wilderness impressed on the Israelites that they were dependent upon God (Deuteronomy 8:2-6 and 11-16). It also gave them a long period in which to study the Torah which they had just been given (shortly after the Exodus), since in the wilderness their time was not taken up by agriculture.
What was the Exodus?
The Exodus was the event in which Moses brought the Israelites out of the Egyptian slavery, after God brought plagues upon the Egyptians (Exodus ch.1-12).
After the Israelites left, Egypt was in turmoil for decades. Though Israel was later harassed (Judges ch.3,6 and 10) by its smaller neighbors (Ammon, Moab, Midian), not a peep was heard from Egypt for four hundred years.
Egypt's turmoil is also borne out by the Ipuwer papyri (Professor John van Seters, Journal of Egyptian Archaeology no. 50). The plagues were also described by ancient historians, including Herodotus and Diodorus. The Exodus is mentioned by Strabo, Berosus, Artapanus, Numenius, Justin, and Tacitus.
