To understand how this could have happened we have to understand what the world was like in the first century AD. Rome had supreme control and it was up to Pontis Pilate to keep the natives under the Roman thumb. Dissadents were delt with swiftly and harshly. The Romans had no problem with a poor carpenter's son from Nazareth. But the Jewish leaders of the day most certainly did. He was causing quite a stir among the common people, challenging the old way. He had the power to incite large crowds and it was making many people nervous. The Jewish leaders used the Roman system to silence Jesus permanently, or so they thought. They did not count on His resurrection.

Roman emperor when Jesus was alive?

The Emperor of Rome at the time of Jesus' death was Tiberius Claudius Nero Caesar, but he did not kill Jesus. The only way Rome had a part in Jesus' death is that the land of Judah was under Roman control and the Jews could not put a person to death but had to appeal to Rome to crucify a person. The Jewish leaders wanted Jesus dead and so they appeal to Pontius Pilate, who was the Procurator (like a governor) to put Jesus to death. He obliged them.

Why did Tiberius not partake in Jesus' trial?

Emperor Tiberius was the head of Rome. It was not his place to deal with the Jews. It was Pilate and Herod's responsibility to deal with the Jew's complaint about Jesus claiming to be the King of the Jews. They heard his testimony and that was enough for the local governing Romans. Tiberius did not need to deal with the matter.

Was Jesus a Jew If he was, why did he become Catholic?

To call Jesus a Christian or a Catholic is anachronistic. Christians are followers of Jesus, and Catholics are a kind of Christian, but those things did not exist in the time of Jesus. All of Jesus's disciples, if you asked them, would certainly define themselves as Jews and would have defined Jesus as a Jew. Before Paul's program of outreach to non-Jews, the entire early church was seen by themselves and by other Jews as Jewish. Only when Bar Kochba, another claimant to the title of Messiah, led a revolt against Rome in the year 132 did Jewish Christians and Jews complete their divorce.

Why did people like Herod and Pilate want to kill John the Baptist and Jesus?

Herod, like his father, was an evil man, jealous of his position and viewed Jesus as the prophisied of King and perceived Jesus therefore as a threat. Though professing to be religious Herod had closer ties with Godless Rome than his subjects. Pilate did not want to kill Jesus, in fact he gave the Jews an option to not so do. The Jews rejected that option, preferring a seditioness, murderer and thief be release to them and Jesus be crucified. Pilate stated he found no fault with Jesus but to please the Jews he released Jesus to them to be crucified.
