That's because they had temples already in those days, so they didn't need to build churches. *Because God does not dwells on temples (churches, mosque, etc.) made by hands. :Acts 7:48 "The Most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands." *In the early days of Christianity, for example during the time described in the book of Acts, Christians were in hiding. Notice how often Peter, Paul, and the other apostles would be arrested. In fact, all of the apostles, including Paul but excluding John, were killed for their preaching; John was exiled to a penal colony on the isle of Patmos, from where he transcribed the Revelation. These were the days of Christians being thrown to the lions in Roman colisseums for sport and punishment. Building a church would've been akin to painting a target on all who entered. :Even today the persecuted Church in a variety of countries has needed to go underground simply to survive.

During the first century, congregations were usually too small to justify purpose-built churches, and Christians met in 'home churches'. Archaeologists believe they have found the world's oldest church, dating from the middle of he first century, so it does seem that churches were built as soon as Christian groups became large enough to support purpose-built churches. By the second and third centuries, quite substantial churches were to be found in Rome and elsewhere.

Why do Christians celebrate Christmas Ash Wednesday Good Friday and Easter?

All of the 'holidays' mentioned above are not biblical but started by men. In particular, the largest Church - the Roman Catholic Church - incorporated each of the above into their religious calendar. After the Reformation and Anglican splits, most all 'daughter' churches continued in these celebrations. But not all Christians observe some/none of these but continue to keep the Holy Days of God first given to the Israelites and kept in the Church Jesus and the Apostles began.

Why do christians only go to church every Sunday?

Many Christians go to church on Sunday, for Sunday school and then worship service. Then they return to church Sunday evening and on Wednesday evening. In between these services there are sometimes special functions and of course on other days a Christian will read and study the scriptures. Christians grow and mature in their faith and faithfulness from the time they are chosen by God for salvation up to the day they die, so you will find Christians from one end of the spectrum to the other depending on their growth. There are those of course who do not grow much at all and that is to their detriment.

What do some altars in Catholic Churches contain as a reminder of the legacy of the early Church?

In the days when the Church was being persecuted, the early Christians held Mass in the catacombs of Rome, using the tomb of a martyr as an altar. It used to be a requirement that the main altar in every Catholic Church have an altar stone into which was sealed a first class relic of a saint, usually a martyr. In recent years this requirement has been abandoned but many older churches still have them.
