Workers were not sent home. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City on March 25, 1911 was very deadly for 146 women. Escape was impaired because the owners had locked the stairwells and exit doors to prevent employees from taking breaks or stealing. The fire started on one floor and those above were notified as the fire first appeared. The factory was closed down, but the civil case against the owners did not convict them. However, OSHA and unions came about because of the poor treatment of the women.

Cottage industry was a system of manufacturing which was very common before the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century. In this system of production, goods would be made in the homes of the workers rather than in a factory setting.

Many sweatshop workers, as you may already know, live in Eastern countries and are most likely at the lower end of their economy. If they do not go home (to a slum) at night then they will most likely sleep right on the factory floor. However I do not know if bedding is or is not provided by the factory owners. A good video to watch is a YouTube video of a BBC Series called 'Blood, Sweat and T-Shirts'. I would thoroughly recommend it. Enjoy :)
Prymont is a suburb of Sydney. It used to be a ship building and factory area. Now the area is a home to office workers and city dwellers. Factories were turned into high rises.
There are many jobs that people in the favelas do: - factory workers - polishing shoes - washing cars at traffic lights (and hoping to be paid!) - construction workers - bus drivers - restaurant workers
