The use of weapons, machine gun, cannon (as a field piece), air planes (bombs). Before this (starting with the American Civil War), men fought in mass and the rifle caused the death (at long range) of a large number of men. Trench Warfare developed because of the failure of the Schlieffen Plan. When Germany realised, that they would have to split their already small army in two, Count Von Schleiffen, Chief of the German General Staff, thought of a plan which would solve this problem. The plan involved invading France through neutral Belgium and catching them off-guard. They would then defeat France within six weeks and be ready to fight Russia, who by this time should have mobilised their army. However, the plan failed, and this led to the introduction of trench warfare. Trench warfare consisted of parallel rows of trenches. During World War 1 trenches had begun to appear by late 1914. On the western front, trenches ran from the Belgium border to the Swiss Border, and they soon became home to millions of soldiers.

The Germans tried to take the French fort of Verdun so the French and English fought the Germans and the Germans could not proceed so they started a battle of attrition to take down the French and English forces and bleed the "French dry".

Trenches were built, soon after the start of the war in France & Belgium, in 1914. Simply the reason for this was to conceal men from direct fire by the enemy.

Also it believed to be originated in the 17th Century, people dug them to get out of the enemies attacks.

Trenches were first found in New Zealand, made by the Maori when they were under attack from the British colonial. They made them to keep themselves hidden while they were under attack.

Weapons became more advanced than their tactical employment, and defense became stronger then offense. Artillery and machine guns dominated the landscape, and the only modicum of safety was found in a trench. It should also be noted that trenches have been used throughout history, but because of these disparities trench warfare was a unique feature of World War 1. More temporary trenches were used in World War 2, along with the even more temporary foxholes.

During World War I, trench-warfare happened simply because it was effective. Given the inefficient offensive tactics dominant at the time, trenches proved to be very effective in stopping the enemy's attacks; thus, both sides made use of them extensively.

At the beginning of the war of both sides became exhausted (both physically and munitions wise) due to the failed attack (Schlieffen Plan) followed by the failed counter attack (Plan 17). This then lead to both side building trenches in a time when defensive weaponry far outpaced offensive weaponry. Machine guns and artillery in a trench was extremely hard to defeat without the aid of more modern offensive weapons like tanks and effective bombing. It was due to the development of these more effective offensive weapons that trench warfare didn't occur in WW2
