Hindus pray for forgiveness, advice, help, intervention, or anything else. Some Hindus don't pray at all. It all depends on the Hindu.

They don't "pray" in the western sense. Praying implies connecting with a deity who cares or listens or intervenes. Buddhism has none of these. Chanting, meditation and listening to discourses on enlightenment focuses one's attention on improving one's lifestyle.
Buddhists don't pray for anything. Prayer can be a request for a change in how the whole universe works to make your life better, Buddhists accept that the universe is as it is and you adjust to it.. Prayer can be a request for salvation, salvation does not enter into the Buddhist world view.

Hindus don't pray to Lord Shiva alone. They pray to many other gods, too.But in answer to your question, I would like to say that Shiva is just a name given to a diety. Your question sounds like you are asking why christians worship Jesus. It's because they have a belief that he is the one who safe guards the Earth.
People pray for different reasons. The most common reason while people pray is because they have a problem. They have no choice, they are forced to pray. Some people don't have problems but they want to make a wish come true - they have wishes, dreams, hopes. They go to God and ask for favors. There are a few people who pray out of gratitude - neither do they have a problem, nor do they need anything, but they want to pray to God out of gratitude. There are some people who pray to God because they love God. Therefore, there are many reasons why people pray to God. However, people do not understand the meaning of prayer. True prayer is communicating with God, not just talking to God, but also waiting for God to speak to us. True prayer leads us to God-realization; then we realize ourselves - we are not this body that we seem to be, we are a manifestation of God. That is true prayer - God-realization , God consciousness.
Life without joy would be dull. Hindus celebrate mainly cause they value their lives and what they have. It also has religious meaning to it.
So they cna talk to their gods and so their gods know that they are worshiping them.
To remember God so that they are induced to follow the right way of living.
Why do Hindus do puja well because it's religious like for example I see people going to church and they might be doing religious things too!
