I'm not a scientist, but I have my own cats and have done research and studies on them. The reason I believe cats roll in dirt is to "cleanse their fur", in a manner of speaking. To them, this is like putting smell good on ourselves. They smell all the different scents and chemicals in the dirt, and so they use it, in a way, to let others know where they have been.

But, there could be other reasons, such as:

Smoothing the fur to help them run quicker

A reason to clean it later

It feels good, remember, they cant just go somewhere to get a massage when they feel like it I hope this helps, but I'm sure you could find this answer by doing some research, and also, just watch the cat. See why they do it by watching what they do before and after. Also, you could keep them away from dirt and see how they react differently from it, so you know the difference between having dirt and not having dirt, and so you could get an idea from that. I personally would do this experiment, but my cats are inside cats only.

It is thought that dogs may choose to roll in foul-smelling things to mask their scent, just as wolves do. Wolves may roll in decomposing carcasses or the feces of herbivores (plant eating animals) to disguise themselves. They want to cover their own odors so their prey will not be alarmed by their scent. This way, they can sneak up on their prey and have a better chance of making a kill. Some behaviorists feel dogs may roll in smelly things to 'advertise' what they have found to other dogs. No matter the reason, unfortunately, some of our domesticated friends have held onto this trait. How many of us have given a dog a bath only to find him running outside to again roll in something foul?

Many cats and dogs love to drop and roll on smelly and even dead things. Although no one is sure why pets enjoy this strange behavior many animal behaviorists believe they do it to make their own scent, advertise they were there, or to provide themselves with a water-resistant coating.

Cats are smelly?

Surprisingly, Cats Are not at all Smelly. Considering in the summer time lots of people let their cats wander off in their backyard, they lick themselves clean for "Protection" and stay out of the dirt. Also, a Cat can ONLY be Smelly if the litter box is smelly. If the litter box is smelly that most likely means that your cat has problems with its stomach. Its nothing To get TOO Worked up about, All you have to do when your cat gets constipated is See a vet ASAP. Cats are VERY clean domestic Animals, Not at all dirty.

Why does your dog roll in rabbit poop in the yard?

They roll in it for the same reason they'll roll on anything "smelly"... it's a hunting instinct. Dogs do that to mask or cover their own scent.

I live in Arizona and my cats always roll in the rocks when they go outside. But why do they do this when there is grass right next to it?

Because cats are weird, lol. Often cats roll around and rub on things to put their scent onto it, it is their way of marking that certain area as theirs.Sometimes I think my cats do it just because they like being dirty before they come back into the house. ^_~
