Hamsters bite when they feel threatened. Usually they will warm up to you and become used to your voice, it takes a few days or sometimes a few weeks. If your hamster is biting you try washing your hands really good before attempting to handle your pet. The smell of food is definitely a trigger to their senses and they think, "yumm food." I have heard that male hamsters are more aggressive than female hamsters. My hamster is a male and he does bite from time to time. Mostly try not to sneak up on them in their cages. Move slow. and if they appear uncomfortable, probably for the sake of your fingers let them be.

male hamsters do bite. females can bite if they are startled but they are more likely not to bite. all hamsters boy or girl will bit e if they are startled before you hold them you have to rub their back or head and then gently pick them up.

Because they are trying to clean themselves and they cant get in any water or they would drown so they scratch and a lot of times they can scratch like a dog does where it lifts up its leg and it seems like they are scratching at 100 miles per hour.

Rodents teeth grow continously. So to wear them down they will gnaw on anything which is hard.

Go to a petshop and buy some purpose made gnawing sticks for it or get some fruit tree wood and see if he likes that. (Fruit tree wood because its non poisonous).

They do this to clean the dirt out of their fur, if the fur is matted or of some sort. This is totally normal, although if your hamster has a large amount of matted fur, and he can seem to get it out naturally, you can snip only the matted fur out but be extra careful, you dont want to hurt poor hammy! :-)

Hope this helps!

They're rodents and will gnaw on stuff to wear their teeth. Placing a piece of wood or something might get some of them to leave the wires along and gnaw on that instead. There are also specialised toys that can be bought in some petstores.

They bite each other and scratch with their nails. If your hamsters are fighting separate them immediately, they can cause a lot of damage and their wounds can get seriously infected.

What should you do for a hamster who was injured by his new 'roommate'?

First, bring your injured hamster to the vet for an examination. Make sure it will heal up nicely. *Mature hamsters are solitary animals. This means they like to live alone. If your hamsters were both six months old, they would start to gain territory for themselves. They will bite, scratch, and hiss at other hamsters to mark their territory. My guess is that you had two male hamsters that were six moths old. The stronger one injured the weaker on. Secondly, you need to get separate cages for your hamsters.

Does hamsters do any harm to people?

Generally, no, but hamsters have very long, strong, sharp foreteeth that can bite down, to the point that blood is drawn or even severe damage is done, depending on where it bit, how long, and how hard. Their claws can also be sharp and scratch whoever is holding them if one is not careful.
