That's just like asking why do humans eat, or any other animal for that matter. The answer is that so they can live, function, produce more offspring to ensure the continuation of their genetics, and have the energy to grow (if young) and/or maintain their weight, bodily functions and homeostasis. They eat also to produce enough energy to be mobile and alert, all as a means to ensure their survival. Horses naturally will travel 12 to 15 miles in a day (sometimes more if they must), and must eat almost constantly to ensure their energy stores are not depleted. If depleted they will be unable to run away from predators or keep up with the herd.
