Genealogy records are valuable, especially searchable databases. People went to a lot of trouble to gather them and share them and the various online companies went to a lot of trouble and expense to collect, organize and create searchable data bases. That information is a commodity and no one gives away their product for free.
However, you can perform an online search for free genealogical information by searching a name and the date of birth, especially for earlier ancestors. Many people share their information at personal websites. You may find your ancestor listed in one of those family sites. You may even find historical accounts of your ancestors.
Most genealogy search sites charge a fee for regular use in order to cover the cost of maintaining and constantly updating their databases. These sites invest significant resources in collecting and organizing vast amounts of historical records and genealogical data, which requires ongoing efforts and expenses. Charging fees allows them to sustain their operations, improve the quality of their services, and provide a better user experience for their customers.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) operates familysearch.org. This is considered by many to be one of the leading free genealogy sites. The Church also operates hundreds of free "Family History Centers" where anyone is welcome to recieve free assistance with their family history, as well as have access to familysearch.org, the Church's extensive Family History Library, and several subscription-based genealogy sites (such as ancestry.com) free of charge. If you search hard enough, yes, you can find some. Some people have been able to trace their family's heritage back at many hundred years without using Ancestry.com or any other genealogy site. Also, many people who have used Ancestry.com in the past have posted their findings and family trees on their own websites. You might try using a search engine (like Google or Bing) to find information by entering a person's name in quotes (ex: "John Edward Doe"). You might also want to include a birthday or day of death (not in quotes) to improve your results. This method is not guaranteed to work because not every family has kept great family records, and even fewer have posted on private web sites, but if you cannot use real archives and will not pay for access to the pay sites, that is all you can do..
There are several alternative websites to findmypast. For example, one could try ancestry sites, genealogy sites, my family history sites and my heritage sites.
