Hindsight is always 20-20, and ideas about how long the US Civil War might last at any given point in time is a tough prediction to make. Some historians claim that until late in 1864, the Confederacy was still a viable Rebel government. A small minority of historians claim that the war was actually over by the end of 1864. They reason that since that only 50% of Southern soldiers were still in their assigned combat units, most Southerners had given up the fight. Of course this remains a controversy.
The appointment of U.S. Grant as General-in-Chief in March of 1864 is considered by many historians as a vital step President Lincoln had to make. Or some would say Lincoln's election win in November. (If he'd lost, the South would probably have been granted its independence.)
In early 1864, the Battle of Mansfield was fought. The battle location was just south of the Louisiana town of Shreveport.
There were only two ways that the South could have won the Civil War. With British aid - not possible after Lincoln issued the Proclamation. Or if Lincoln had been voted out in November 1864 - he wasn't.
