Some no doubt feel their faith threatened if people they respect do not hold the same beliefs as they do. Others may believe that evangelising wins favour in heaven, and for that purpose is preferable to doing charitable work or donating to causes such as the Haitian earthquake funds. Some people have a tendency to want to have some assurance that they are right and you are wrong (ego polishing) They do this by trying to discredit your beliefs. In their mind its a win/win exercise - if you convert then their superior arguments have won out, if you don't convert then you are too foolish to see the truth and not worth their time.
In other cases they are afraid they are wrong and want to publicly demonstrate their trust in their belief. This is similar to the story of the Emperor's New Clothes.
