Before the introduction of cursive writing in the 8th Century BCE there was no effective written record. And the surviving records after that are very sparse. Oral tradition is very unreliable - after three generations it becomes so distorted that you don't know what is fact and what is faction. That's why we call it the Dark Age.
The first effective Greek historical accounts come from the late 5th Century BCE, principally from the historians Herodotus, Thucydides and Xenophon.
