Anyone can suffer from an eating disorder, and this includes males. The fashion industry puts forward certain images of males and some boys/young men feel they need to conform. It seems that aating disorders are more common in women but they certainly exist among men - and need to be treated.

Men and boys DO get eating disorders, although not as often as women and girls. There is also a reluctance for some males to admit they have such a problem, because society tends to view it as a "female" problem. One reason it is more common with females is that there is so much pressure on women and girls to stay thin in this society, which isn't the case with males as much. One group of males that can sometimes have eating disorders is jockeys, because they have to stay under a certain weight in order to remain a jockey. But males who are not jockeys can have eating disorders, too.

Women have always been more focused on looks. For hundreds and thousands of years it has been important to look "good" and "beautiful" and to be accepted on a physical level by society. To conform to this, more women develop eating disorders. Since this standard and pressure is less for men, far fewer men develop eating disorders as a result.

I believe men are being more subjected to eating disorders because, many of men have low self-estem. and some men are scared of being rejected by women so their solution is to eat awy their pain. Which causes alot of health issues, such as obesity.

In society and the media, women are more prone to descrimination or demands based on their looks. Women also naturally put more effort than men do into their looks, and will judge others more than their male counterparts based on appearances (both physcial and material). For this reason, current social demands to be thinner in many cultures are pressuing women to be unnaturally thin, and eating disorders tend to arise more commonly than with men, who are under less pressure to look a certain way.

Women tend to face more pressures from society over appearance, both on a social/personal and media level. Peer pressure and social pressure are large influences on low self esteem and low sense of satisfaction in appearance, both of which are large causes of eating disorders. Female bodies also change more rapidly due to aging and events like child birth, making the chances of anorexia higher as women try to lose the weight or return to the bodies they had when they were younger, usually which is not possible.

Why does anorexia always affect women'?

Anorexia does not always affect women. About 10% of anorexics are male. Anorexia - and most other eating disorders - are more common in women for a few reasons. Women naturally are more social, and thus focus on social pressures more then men. When social pressures demand thin-ness, women are more likely to develop eating disorders. A woman also experiences more changes in her body (pregnancy, for example) that can fuel body dislike and eating disorders. Women also tend to be more critical of each other than men are to each other. This harshness or bullying can lead to low self esteem and eating disorders, too.
