This company has been around for decades and is a major market contributor, they make the internet faster. You've probably just seeing their accelerator.
I have an idea of what you may be seeing - as they have a download accelerator that when you go to certain popular web sites for software or updates (Quicken, Microsoft, et cetera) it may prompt you to download an accelerator (netsession) , which helps speed that download and future downloads of that software and your future downloads from other companies that also are delivered via Akamai which are many. You may find the additional speed overall useful to you - as Akamai delivers 22% of the internet, a significant portion.
That said, your local firewall may be prompting you with a warning about it or something... you can opt to not install the accelerator and you can remove it if you really want. I don't recommend the latter because it's speeding up your own experience and fairly harmless. but in case you want to read more about it just Google "remove netsession" .
