Because the pump is set to "vacuum to waste".
You vacuum waste from a pool with a pool vacuum connected to a pole to push it around the vacuuming devise is plugged into the suction of the pump. If you wish to vacuum to waste on the other hand you will first have to turn of the pump then turn the lever on the top of the filter to waste. This will dump the water, so don't vac to waste any more then you have too.
Clean water is very important. If we waste clean water, we are going to use dirty water for the next few centuries. Imagine yourself washing your hands with muddy, filthy water... YUCK!

You can vacuum a salt water pool the same way you would a non salt water pool. If you are vacuuming on the filter setting, your filter will help to clean the debris out of the pool. If you are dealing with a very dirty pool and use the waste setting, you will be wasting some of the water from the pool in the process. Depending on how much water you take out and need to refill, you will most likely need to add some salt back in to get your salt level back to normal operating levels.
They eat their own waste, but they get sick when their water is unclean. They get infections from the dirty water. So clean out the water at least once a week.
