the salt water produces electricity because the salt turns into ions in the water which in turn conduct electricity...

salt (NaCl) is a ionic bond formed by combination of Cl & Na Here Cl is +vely charged & Na is -vely charged so they are neutral &hence do not conduct electrictybut when anIonic compound like NaCl is kept in water it easily splits resulting in formation of Cl becomes + and Na becomes - becoming conductive to electricity and HEnce conducts electricity

for a substance to conduct electricity, it must have charged particles which are free to move. Sea water has ionic salts such as NaCl which form ions(charged particles). Pure water, on the other hand, forms a negligible amount of ions when water dissociates.

The conduction of water depends on the presence of ions. In the case of fresh water, there are only a very few ions present, from the dissociation of its own molecules. (Though there is enough conduction to be dangerous with mains electricity.) Salt water contains lots more ions because sodium chloride is completely dissociated in water, giving free moving positive sodium ions and negative chloride ions. If by salt water you mean sea water, there will be many more ions present as well.

Electricity cannot be conducted through a salt crystal since there can be no ions movement because all of the metal ions and non-metal ions are frozen in place. Once the salt crystal is dissolved in water ions are formed by dissociation and are free to move and carry the electrical current.

Salt can conduct electricity if it is melted.

100% pure h20 is an insulator....doesnt conduct electricity

any impurity causes water to contain withi in it atoms with valence electrons (the orbiting electron that's in the orbit farthest from the atoms nucleus)

the valence electrons in atoms are always moving randomly around the place and into orbit around nighboring electrons(only when that atoms valence electron is out and about to allow for a new electron to fit)

salt atoms must contain valence electrons that jump from one atom in the water substance to other atoms, a current is when a steady stream of them move along the atoms of a conductor in a particular direction

Tap water also coduct a considerable amount of electricity due to ions in it.But distilled water is a very poor conductor. It has few amount of ions due to dissociation water molecules.Salt water has high amount of ions,so it conduct electricity very well.

Which type of water conducts electricity salt water or fresh water?

Both conduct electricity well, however salt water is a better conductor due to ions available.

Does salt water conduct more electricity than fresh water?

salt water conducts more electricity than fresh water because it contains great amounts of ions which can conduct a lot of electricity

Is water is a bad conductor of electricity?

Pure water is a poor conductor of electricity because it exists in solution as electrically neutral molecules. the molecules carry no electric charge and there are no ions in solution to carry charges. Hope this helps, physicsisland@hotmail.com

Can a compost soil conduct electricity?

Yes, compost soil can conduct electricity. The condition of electricity draws upon ions and nutrients. Dark-colored, fresh-smelling, nutrient-rich organic matter such as compost and humus have both.

Why does lightning strike near water?

Lightning strikes strike near water because water is a good conductor of electricity. Most lightning strikes happen by the ocean because the salt makes it an even better conductor at electricity than fresh water.

Why does salt dissolved in water conduct electricity?

Because it contains sodium (Na+) ions! (Sodium from sodium chloride [table salt])Ions in aqueous solution carry charge. If we assume that fresh water contains just pure H20 (excluding fluoride ions, which we might find in a lot of western societies), then we can infer that since salt water contains ions it must be a better conductor than just fresh (pure) water.

Is water an example of an compound?

Answer True: Water is H20.like seawater, alkaline water, and fresh water.

Why would something be soluble in water but not conductive?

water does not conduct electricity much when it is pure because it does not have any ions that are free to move. Only 0.00001% of H2O is broken into H+ ions and OH- ions . However when it is in a solution with other compounds such as NaCl it may conduct electricity as the ions are free to move when electricity passes trough.

When sodium chloride dissolves in water and the sodium ions and chlorine ions become surrounded by water molecules will this solution conduct electricity?

NaCl can not conduct electricity in the solid form . When NaCl dissolves in water, it ionises into Na+ and Cl-. When electrodes are inserted into the ionic solution, the Na+ ions travel to the negative electrode and the Cl- electrons would travel to the positive electrode, hence, electricity is conducted.
