Mary was a good and morally excellent woman. She did all that she could to keep the commandments. Worshiped the one and only true God, helped those in need and made herself available to all who needed advice. Was a good listener and thought of others rather than self.

Jesus, while dying on the cross bequeathed the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. John with the words, "behold your mother" and bequeathed John to her with the words, "Behold your son". In doing this, St. John stands for us, and Our Blessed Lord bequeathed all of us to Mary as her children.

We are all called to model her in her poverty, chastity, and obedience:

Every person is called to be poor with the poor Christ, to give up what he does not need to help his poor neighbor. As St. John the Baptist put it, "if you have two cloaks and your neighbor has none, then you give one to him.

We are all called to chastity in our state of life, single people are called to complete chastity, married people are called to be chaste in that they only have relations with their spouse and never in a selfish way.

Finally, we must all be obedient to God, to His church, to our lawful superiors (country, elected officials, boss, parents) and to be obedient to each other seeing Christ in each and every person in front of us.

In all of this we model the Blessed Virgin, who was poor, literally, with Christ; who was chaste her entire life; and who was the model of obedience to God's will for her beginning with her "Be it done unto me according to Your Word". We ask her for her intercession with her son for strength and for her guidance in doing so.

There are many reasons why Mary is important to the Catholics. Mary was born without any sin at all. She is actually one of 2 human beings EVER to be without sin ( the other of course is Jesus Christ). Mary is also extremely important because of the Annunciation of the birth of Jesus. The Angel Gabriel came down from heaven and told her that she was to bear a son. Mary, at the time was only 15 or 16 years old at the time. Also, she had no husband at the time. As was custom in Galilee at the time if Mary had a son without any husband, by the Law of Moses, the men were to stone her to death. But Mary said,

" Let it be done to me as you say it is"

This is why Mary is so amazing. I don't know about you, but I would have a hard time saying Yes to God if I was her.

Catholic AnswerIt is extremely difficult to overemphasize the importance of Our Blessed Lady to Catholics. Not only was she the Mother of God when she gave birth to Our Blessed Lord, but He gave her to all of us as our mother from the cross when he said "Behold your mother" to the apostle John. Our Blessed Lady is Mother of the Church, when Our Blessed Lord crowned her Queen of Heaven, He was patterning off the Queen Mother in the Old Testament. In the Davidic Kingdom, it was not the King's wife who was Queen, it was his mother. She is not only the Mother of the Church, and the mother of all Christians, but the prototype of what a true Christian will be, as her entire life is oriented towards her Son. Although God could have chosen any way to redeem the world, He made it all dependent on one woman, and all of creation waited for her "Fiat" to the Archangel Gabriel, it all depended on her accepting to be the Mother of Our Savior. There is no way, finally, to overemphasize her importance to all of Creation. She is the woman that God has been madly in love with since the beginning when He prophesied to the devil that her seed would crush his head.

We honour the Virgin Mary because:

* She was born without original sin and never sinned in her life. She was raised up into heaven after the course of her life because she lived a sinless life. * She willingly accepted God's call to be the bearer of Jesus. (Henceforth the title "Mother of God" since Jesus is part of the trinity.)

* She was the bearer and mother of Jesus. * Many Marian miracles and answered prayers occurred. We do not worship Mary or anyone one/thing else besides God himself. The Church forbids all worship except the worship of God.

This is a protestant view. God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus as a earthly mother , to fulfill Isaiah prophecy.

Roman Catholic AnswerOne reason she is important is that she is Jesus' mother, and thus the mother of God. Another reason is that no one, ever, in the history of the world, lived their life so in conformity with God's Will for them, as Mary did. To better understand why the Mother of God is important to us, one has to go to the Old Testament and read about the Queen Mother in ancient Israel. Solomon, when sitting on his throne, rose from his throne at the approach of his mother, and called for another throne to be brought and set up beside his. The Queen Mother had a lot of "pull" you might say, in ancient Israel. It was the Queen Mother who ruled as Queen, as there were many "wives". Then go all the way to the book of Revelation and see Mary crowned in Heaven. Realize that, in between, when Jesus, with His dying breath, from the cross, entrusted His beloved disciple to Mary, and Mary to John - in that action, we understand that He bequeathed her to all of us as our spiritual mother, and we to her as her spiritual children.

God has two images in His mind for everyone who lives, one is what He thinks that should be, the other is what we actually are. And we spent our whole lives trying to live up to what He has planned for us. Mary is the only one that God only has one image of, as she perfectly fulfilled His will throughout her life. When you look at Mary, you must fall to your knees and thank God for His gracious power when you see what it actually looks like when it is perfectly fulfilled in a human being.

Catholics honor Mary because God chose her through all time to be the mother of Jesus, the Lord incarnate.

She is the only one to conceive of the Holy Spirit. (Luke 1:35) She freely chose to accept the will of the Lord. (Luke 1:38) Christ took his humanity from her. (John 1:14). She continues to be Jesus' mother and we were entrusted to her at the foot of the cross (John 19:27) and we pray to her to intercede for us as she did at Christ's first public miracle at the wedding feast of Cana (John 2)

A popular Catholic prayer is called the "Angelus." I've abbreviated it to a few key portions for this answer. This is to see the manner that Catholics use when they pray to Mary.

The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary:

- And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord:

- Be it done unto me according to Thy word.

And the Word was made Flesh:

- And dwelt among us.

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,

- that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Because she was the natural mother of Jesus Christ and carried God in her womb. Since Jesus is the second person of the blessed trinity he is God and Mary bore him. Mary was born without original sin. She was holy and sinless and favored by God. A pure and spotless vessel that carried the baby Jesus. That is why she was asked to bear the Christ child and she accepted. "Saying I am the hand maiden of the Lord let it be done unto me according to his will". Her spouse is the Holy Spirit which is the third person in the Blessed Trinity. Jesus performed his first miracle because of the request of his Mother. ( The changing of water into wine at the wedding feast of Canna even though it was not yet his time.) Catholic Christians believe that Jesus would never refuse a request by His Mother so they pray to Her with child like confidence that She will intercede on there behalf for them. Lastly when Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth who was pregnant with Jesus's cousin St. John the Baptist St. Elizabeth said after Mary's greeting "Blessed are you amongst women and Blessed if the fruit of your womb. Mary replied" Because he has regarded the humility of his handmade; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

When did Catholics actually start worshiping the Virgin Mary?

We don't. & we never did. We don't pray to Mary and the saints in the sense of worshiping them, but in the sense of asking them to pray for us--as we ask each other for prayer."971 "All generations will call me blessed": "The Church's devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship."513 The Church rightly honors "the Blessed Virgin with special devotion. From the most ancient times the Blessed Virgin has been honored with the title of 'Mother of God,' to whose protection the faithful fly in all their dangers and needs. . . . This very special devotion . . . differs essentially from the adoration which is given to the incarnate Word and equally to the Father and the Holy Spirit, and greatly fosters this adoration."514 The liturgical feasts dedicated to the Mother of God and Marian prayer, such as the rosary, an "epitome of the whole Gospel," express this devotion to the Virgin Mary.515 " ~Catechism of the Catholic ChurchI am posting a link to a site that also explains more about what Catholics believe about Mary & why they honor her.
