The Washington Monument is differently colored because the marble came from different quarries. From bottom to top, marble was quarried first from Texas; Maryland; Sheffield, Massachusetts; Cockeysville, Maryland.

Because in 1854 it was interrupted by the civil war. When they went back to construction they had to use different colored stones.
