I think you mean to ask, why don't ponds and lakes simply drain completely into the ground? In fact, water does "leak" into the earth via subterranean passageways called underground rivers. Also, water pressure plays a part at the bottom of any sizable body of water; this compacts the bottom surface to such a hardness that it becomes "waterproof" to "leaking".
