What is wrong if your guinea pig often has a white milky substance in his eye and how can you treat it?

Please take your guinea pig to the vet because it could have a cold in the eye or a trauma to the eye. Don't try to fix the problem yourself! Good luck Marcy Try putting a warm tea bag on her eye... my guinea pig had this problem and it cleared up in a week. White is normal, that is just how the eye cleans itself. If it worsens or turns a different color go to the vet to get antibotics.

Normal Cavies (guinea pigs) excrete a milky white liquid which lubricates their eyes and is used to help them clean their faces. After the eye fills up with the white fluid, the cavy will then take their front paws and make washing motions. This may happen several times per day although you may never even notice. VC Richardson describes a "milky ocular discharge" as "a normal fluid which is released from the eye as part of the grooming process."

∙ 13y agoIf the dark part of your guinea pig's eyes is milky, then your guinea pig is going blind, or is already blind.
If there is milky discharge, there's an infection, and you should really take your guinea pig to the vet for the right medication. You could try bathing its eyes twice daily in a very weak salt solution, but guinea pigs are very sensitive and you have to be careful.
