His opponent, Stephen A. Douglas, believed that people should be allowed to decide. Lincoln's speeches made him a national political figure. In his famous "House Divided" speech, he said, "a house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free." His words alarmed people who were doing wrong.
