In my opinion, the mental health field, unfortunately, goes through "fads." For certain time periods, it seems that almost everyone who has any kind of problem is given a particular diagnosis. Television is particularly susceptible to this phenomenon. I can remember when every series had a character with multiple personality disorder, and the movie of the week was "Sybil." These days hoarding seems to be in the limelight. I haven't seen any statistics which indicate that it is any more prevalent than it was in prior years/decades (although, to be honest, I haven't researched it specifically).
Programs about dysfunctional people are inexpensive to produce. All it requires is a director, a camera crew, a narrator and one writer. No actors, no sets. Hoarders are much easier to work with than people with alcohol/drug problems.
