These are of four types:

1. Title Master : When you open a new presentation in power point, the program assumes that you will begin your slide show with a title slide. Adding a title and subtitle to this slide layout is as easy as clicking in the text boxes provided and typing.

2. Notes Master : This feature of power point enables adding notes top the slide and these notes could be seen afterwards in normal views. These notes might be some kind of special points or notifications.

3. Handout Master : These are basically thumbnails of slides printed together on a sheet of paper. Such layouts can be cutomized to suit specific requirements. These are often printed to be sent for review to those who matter before and actual presentation is shown to an audience. During the presentation these handouts can be distributed to the audience.

4. Slide Master : Each power point template comes with a slide master. The slide master controls the overall formatting and object placement for the presentation - Font type, Font color, size, background color, and certain special effects (like text shadowing). When you want to make the global change to the appearance of your slide you don't have to change each slide individually, just make changes once on the slide master and that will change other slides itself.

There are lots of reasons. Basically, the idea of the Master Slide is to allow you to define how all the slides will look without having to individually do it on each slide. Whatever way the Master Slide looks, is how all the other slides initially look. So say you had a 10 slide presentation, and you wanted your name to appear on the top left corner of all 10 slides. You could go into each slide and do it, or just go into the Master Slide and put it there, and it will automatically appear on your 10 slides, and any new ones you add. It will be in the exact same position and look identical on all slides, so you don't have to worry about that and can focus on the main things that you want on the individual slides.
