1. When you smoke, nicotine is sent to your brain where it attaches to nicotine receptors. 2. a chemical called dopamine is released, making you feel good. 3. Then, your dopamine levels drop. This makes you want another cigarette.

The probability that a long-term smoker will eventually be killed by tobacco is 1 in 2. The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated: "A cigarette is . . . a cleverly crafted product that delivers just the right amount of nicotine to keep its user addicted for life before killing the person."

In the United States, tobacco use is to blame for 1 out of every 5 deaths. In that country, it kills more people each year than "alcohol, illegal drug use, homicide, suicide, car accidents, and AIDS combined," states a report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Those poisonous chemicals especially harm the health of children. It makes the user a slave to the damaging habit. In fact, researchers believe that addiction to nicotine, a key chemical in tobacco, is one of the most difficult addictions to break. Please see Awake article on jw.org

It is hard to quit smoking because the nicotine is very addictive. It is very possible to quit smoking without any help. I quit 7 weeks ago and after a rough start, I no longer want a cigarette.

To quit smoking is certainly a difficult thing to stop doing. Why? The very main reason to that is the extremely addictive taste of nicotine, known for its stimulating effect especially for people who would often find themselves in stressful conditions.

Another reason is that everything pertaining to smoking is addictive as well. Just opening up a pack of cigarettes, removing one from the pack, and then hitting it against your hand is addictive. Putting it into your mouth, lighting a match and puffing to get it lit, is addictive. Also flicking out off the ash at the end, and even putting it out is addictive.

To stop one, you must stop all of it.

well there is something in the cigar or cigarette called nicotine which makes it very hard to stop. nicotine is a drug and makes you want to carry on smoking. This nicotine makes you addicted like how you get addicted to a video game or something so it is hard to stop. However, the hardest part to quit involves the smokers association of cigarettes to things such as stress relief, alertness, and other things which are actually caused by the nicotine withdrawal itself. Since nicotine withdrawal feels like everyday stress, insecurity, sleepiness, a smoker will smoke a cigarette which will replace the nicotine, and stop the symptoms. This associates cigarettes with stress relief, helping them stay awake, and helping with other symptoms which are actually CAUSED by the nicotine. Then the fear comes along with it, which is, will I have to battle these symptoms forever?! The answer to that? No, you wont, the symptoms of withdrawal go away mostly in three days, then almost completely in a week, then you have no nicotine in your system after a month. So if this question is by a smoker who wants to quit, I recommend you look up mister Allen Carr...I used his system, and it worked perfectly, cold turkey, and it was definitely easier than I thought it would be. Also, I smoked for three years, I am in the military, and I quit while deployed to Afghanistan. :) Just goes to show, its not about where you are.

Because Nicotine is addictive, and the act of smoking is habit forming.

When a person tries to stop smoking they not only suffer physical effects due to the lack of nicotine, but they also suffer metal effects as they are missing the act of smoking.

Of the two, the symptoms arising from lack of nicotine would, from personal experiance, seem to pass the worst stages in 24-48 hours, and be almost gone at the end of the first week.

After this what you are fighting is the mental effect mentioned, in that you are no longer doing something that used to make you feel "good." (or more accurately, prevent you feeling bad.)

In effect you brain is saying "That used to feel good, do it again." What you have to do is not do it again, and let your body "forget" it, and that is the really hard part, as it will take weeks/months.

After 2 weeks not smoking I feel so much batter!

Yet I still want to smoke.

How stupid!

I feel the best I have felt for 15 years, and I still want to do the thing that made me feel bad!

That is why it is hard.
