To operate the refrigerator, requires a lot of energy. When the refrigerator is running, some of that energy is used to cool the interior (about 80% of said energy.) But this is not "making cold." A refrigerator cools by moving heat from inside it, to the outside. This heat is dissipated into the room by the cooling fins on the rear. The whole process happens silently and slowly, and we never notice it.

So even though the inside of the refrigerator may be cold, the process of making it cold warmed up the entire room, plus 20% (the energy wasted in the conversion process.) Thus, opening the door to cool the room will never work, because the refrigerator cannot make cold, it can only move heat around. And in doing so, it itself always dissipates 20% more than the energy moved, which ultimately ends up as heat, further heating up the room.

Ironically, the room would be cooler without the refrigerator in it.

Why do you feel cool while opening or closing the door of a refrigerator?

Yes You Can

Would opening the refrigerator cool a room in a house?

If you opened the refrigerator door a person can cool themselves off. It would not be energy efficient though to try to cool an entire room or house through use of a refrigerator. A refrigerator would not be capable of cooling that large of an area.

Why cant opening the door of the refrigerator will cool the kitchen?

If you have noticed the warm air blowing from behind your refrigerator, that is the heat that was in the air that is inside your refrigerator. If you leave the door open the air around the refrigerator will briefly feel cold, but it will warm back up and the food in the refrigerator will go bad.

Does opening of the door of refrigerator increase the power consumption?

Sure. The more the door is opened the more it needs to cool down, so the more power it will use.

Why opening the door of a refrigerator on a hot day will not coll?

Can you ruin a refrigerator by opening and closing the door too often or leave door open to put away groceries?

No, you cannot ruin the refrigerator by opening and closing the door or by leaving the door open for a few minutes. Refrigerators do have a lifespan for the number of times the doors can be opened and closed before a hinge breaks or the seal is damaged, but this cycle can be in the millions - so it won't be affected with normal use. Each time you open and close the refrigerator, some cool air escapes and can mean that the compressor will have to run to get temperature back to where it should be. Leaving the door open for a few minutes does cool off the interior and things inside will begin to cool off as well. This will result in the refrigerator compressor having to run to get the temperature back down. A good refrigerator is designed to have the compressor go through these cycles many thousands of times. The only reason someone may be concerned with having the refrigerator work more would be the electric bill (it goes up, refrigerator compressors use a lot of power) or the refrigerator compressor has had problems previously.

Why do you feel cool while opening the door of a refrigator?

You feel cold because... come on its common sense really .... The cold in the fridge or refrigerator comes out and hits you, the same when you go into a wine cellar or ice storage room you feel the cold when open door

Can you increase the temperature of room by opening the door of refigerator?

By opening the door of refrigerator, we can decrease the temperature of a room. A refrigerator works by taking heat from its interior and radiating it away from the coil at the back so the net effect of a refrigerator in a room with its door open should be no change in temperature. However, we should remember that a fridge has an electric motor in it and as all machinery is never 100% efficient there should be a heat gain from having it working. So yes opening the door of a fridge would increase the temperature of the room.

Why does a magnet stick to a refrigerator door?

Metals with magnetic properties can be applied in this case. Magnets are often used along the edges of refrigerator doors, as they can produce a tight seal with the opening of the refrigerator. This way, there will be less heat gain into the refrigerator compartment and would save energy needed for the coolers.

Can a kitchen be cooled indefinitely by leaving the door of the refrigerator open?

No, although the short-term effect would be for the refrigerator air / freezer air to mix with and cool the air in the room. The function of refrigerator is a heat exchanger; it removes heat from the inside of the fridge and pumps it to the outside of the fridge. If we open the refrigerator door, it will remove the heat from the air that mixes inside, but then will exchange the heat back into the kitchen. That's why the room can't be cooled for a long period. In fact, due to waste heat, the room could become warmer once the refrigerator contents have reached room temperature.

Is it possible to cool down a room on a heat summer day by leaving the refrigerator door open?

No, the fridge puts as much heat out its back as it will put out the door.

What size opening should be left for a refrigerator?

Typically when building a home without a specific model of refrigerator determined in advance, the refrigerator is assumed to be 36" wide by 69" tall. Because of differences in floor heights, refrigerator hinge heights and cabinet door swings (cabinet doors above the refrigerator can bump into refrigerator top mount hinges), add an inch or two to the height of the opening. A safe opening size would be 36.5"-37" wide and 70"-71" tall.
