Vision
Each part of the journey had a specific focus on an issue related to extreme poverty so that by the time the expedition was complete, every main topic was addressed. Travelling by bicycle gives a close connection with the people and the land and so the vision is to present the issues of poverty from a new perspective, linked within the story of cycling across Africa in a continuous line from west to east between the continent's widest points.
Benefits
Education Program
The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development supported the Breaking the Cycle expedition by developing an education programme that achieved quality learning outcomes for students in key areas of inquiry relating to Kate's experiences. This includes deepening students' awareness and understandings of African cultures, geography, environmental sustainability and the causes and effects of extreme poverty. Many Australian schools became involved in this program.
