Briefly, Santa Anna was beaten and the Mexicans exiled him to Cuba. Texas became a country for the next ten years. Although not recognized by Mexico, neither did Mexico conquer Texas, which later decided to become a state in the US. The Battle of San Jacinto was the decisive battle which enabled Texas to rule itself rather than being ruled by Mexico.
