As with many Buddhist questions there isn't one answer. It's important to state that many Buddhists take formal vows of celibacy, others choose this way of life outside of any formal structure. The teachings are generally pretty clear that sexual activity 'per se' isn't a problem rather our liking or disliking of it may be. Some of the reasons that I'm aware of why Buddhists may be celibate include:
- To try an overcome one's own sexual desire
- Not encourage or stimulate sexual desire in another
- To retain as much energy as possible for spiritual development
- To provide an example for others
- To maintain one's own promises or vows
Some of the religions that practice celibacy include Catholicism, Buddhism (particularly in monastic traditions), and Hinduism (found in some sects and practices). Additionally, some orders of Jainism and certain branches of Orthodox Christianity also advocate celibacy as a way to focus on spiritual growth.
One basic tenet of Buddhism is that suffering is caused by attachments. As monks are devoting their lives to realizing enlightenment it is necessary to sever as many attachments as possible and this includes spouses. There is no "sin" in it. It is just not conducive to what they've taken a vow to accomplish.
