He was widely unpopular, even in the north. He was elected by 39.8% of the popular vote.

He was portrayed unfavorably in the press as weak, inferior, an embarrassment to the nation. Even his signature achievment, the Emancipation Proclamation (which never actually freed the slaves) was lambasted as dictatorial, and as a law that would bring about the death of the nation and the constitution. He curtailed more liberties than perhaps any other president. During his administration the military was plagued with desertion, factories with strikes, and cities with riots.

President Lincoln lead the nation to war, and there are always people who do not like war, which is, after all, very expensive and destructive, and which costs many people their lives. People were drafted to fight in the Civil War, and therefore were being compelled to risk their lives for the cause, whether they wanted to or not. Many people object to that, understandably. We saw similar anti-war protests during the Vietnam era. Of course, when it was all over, many people were glad that the nation was preserved and that slavery was ended. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in itself, the defeat of the Confederacy did create the necessary conditions for a constitutional amendment to end slavery. Lincoln made that possible and therefore does deserve to be called the Great Emancipator. So in retrospect he looks very good. But at the time, many people thought that he was a tyrant.
