Serbia wanted to form a pan-slavic unity, that included areas under Austrian control, such as Bosnia-Herezogiva. Nationalistic groups like the Black hand feared that Austria would prevent this by further annexing parts of the Balkans and Serbia itself. That's why they assassinated Franz Ferdinand, to prevent complete dominance of the slavs under Austria.

Serbian nationalists killed Archduke Ferdinand because they need a reason to start a war. By killing him, they got their war.
