Gandhi was successful for many reasons. Gandhi used non violent ways to protest such as sit ins, but also started ways to improve conditions for everyone in the situation.
gandhi fasted to impress the need to be non-violent. In some of his protests, the British beat his followers. They later retalliated. Gandhi wanted no part of that.
To end civil war. And as a form of passive civil protest. He used fasting to protest the occupation of Britain in his home country of India - and it worked. Millions did it with him, and the British eventually left India.
Gandhi was basically the quintessential epitome of a moral Indian, and other Indians (even of different languages, religions and castes, which segregates most Indians from each other) knew and respected that. During British occupancy of India, many Indians tried to revolt using violent methods, which not only defies Gandhi's values but also leads to a cruel cycle of British retaliating several fold and a needless cycle of bloodshed unleashes itself. By sacrificing something like the human necessity to eat, Indians were moved to unite their differences and protest the British through nonviolent, morally incorruptible methods. Such as boycotting the use to British goods, (obviously a vender can't force the public to buy something), and the british soon found it too cost-worthy to continue to control India, not to mention other nations were starting to seriously look down at England and their use of violence on peaceful people. In short, Gandhi's fast was noble and effective.
