1 Kings chapter 12 tells us that Bethel and Dan were the earliest centres of worship for Israel, although The Bible describes this as an anachronism. Another centre was probably Bet Shemesh. After the fall of Israel in 722 BCE, the people of neighbouring Judah associated themselves more closely with Israel, with the apparent hope of claiming back the 'lost' territory of Israel. In later times, Mount Gerizim, near the city of Samaria, became the centre of worship.

Jerusalem was the centre of worship for the southern kingdom of Judah. It was by far the largest urban centre in the relatively small enclave of Judah, and was well defended. At least in pre-Exilic days, God was believed to actually live in the "holy of holies" in the Jerusalem Temple.

Because the Holy Temple was there. However, there was a period in which many or most of the Ten Tribes of Israel worshiped at Dan and Beth-El.

Assyria then turned its attention to Judah, with the intention of extending its empire southwards, but found the fortified city of Jerusalem too hard to defeat.

Is Judah in Israel?

The former kingdom of Judah is now part of modern Israel and partly in the Palestinian Territory. Judah was a small inland enclave surrounding the city of Jerusalem and quite separate from the kingdom of Israel to its north. Biblical tradition holds that in former times, Judah and Israel had formed a United Monarchy, also known as Israel, but noted archaeologists such as Israel Finkelstein say that this was never the case. Judah and Israel were always separate and had their own separate culture, pottery styles and even their own separate dialects of the Hebrew language.
